What to Wear and What Not to Wear

Model United Nations conferences require all students to dress in appropriate Western Business Attire. You can find some suggestions below or ask any of the secretariat or advisors! 

Ladies

• Tops: Modest blouses, sweaters, cardigans or button up shirts. 
• Bottoms: Skirts/dresses or dress pants. Skirts should come just above the knee, NO SHORTER. Same for length of dresses
• If wearing a skirt or dress please consider hosiery (panty hose, tights, etc. REMINDER: they should not have any print on them!). 
• Please wear appropriate dress shoes as well. (kitten heels or flats) 
• It would be helpful to bring a cardigan or sweater if you do not have long sleeves and a pair of flats for walking! 
  

Tips: Be comfortable and don't be afraid of color. Tight clothing makes it difficult to work during the conference, so make sure you pack smart. Pack items you can mix and match,  shoes and accessories can be a great way to add a pop of color to an outfit. 

Gentlemen 

• What to wear- Tie, dress shirt (button up) and pants. 
• You MUST wear a tie or bow tie! Tie clips or other accessory are great, but not necessary. 
• A blazer or suit is also appropriate, but not required. 
• Please wear dress shoes as well, with black or appropriate colored socks.
  

Tips: Make sure to plan your outfits and bring matching shirt and tie combinations for each day. Make sure your dress pants are slacks or khakis, not cargo pants. A nice belt will help you look more put together. If you only have a few ties, a neutral colored tie that matches your slacks will go with almost everything. Ask an advisor if you don't know how to iron and need help :) 

Don't forget your delegate pin and credentials at all times! 

Any delegate wearing inappropriate attire will be asked to leave and change.

What Not to Wear during Committee
- Jeans
- T-shirts 
- White Socks
-Short Skirts or short dress
- Anything too revealing
- Patterned tights
- Cargo pants
- Polos 
- Shorts 
- Anything your advisors tell you no on :) 

What to Pack

Pack your clothing from above for each day of the conference. See below for other things. 

Other Apparel-

• Boots or walking shoes for outdoors. Please consider we will be walking around the city to restaurants.
  
• Casual clothing for free time. There will be a delegate dance as well as a game night in the hotel. Jeans, sweatshirt, and a T shirt are a good idea.
  
• Bathing suit- if the hotel has a pool, you have the opportunity to use during down time. (Only for Kalamazoo and TC) 
  
• Outdoor- Check what the weather is going to be at the conference and dress appropriately! 
  
  

MISC. –

• Money for 8 meals- two dinners, three breakfasts, three lunches. Delegates also should bring money if they choose to buy coffee or anything from the hotel convenience store.
  
• Consider bringing your own snacks and breakfast food. However, there are often no microwaves or refrigerators in the hotel rooms. (Bagels, dry cereal, granola bars, etc).
  
• We recommend at least one delegate per hotel room bring a laptop or device with internet. It is a good idea for research and prep on upcoming debate after committee hours. Bringing cell phones to the conference are recommended so that we can contact you, however you must turn them off while in committee. Remember: laptops, cell phones, ipods, tablets, and any other electronic devices are not allowed in committee!
  
  

RESEARCH BINDER- 
All delegates must bring a hard copy of their position paper for each topic. It is also useful to build a research binder. This will back up your knowledge and keep you on policy throughout committee!
